SHELTER IN PLACE WARNING KENTUCKY EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCY LOUISVILLE KENTUCKY RELAYED BY NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE LOUISVILLE KY 409 PM EDT WED OCT 31 2012 THE FOLLOWING MESSAGE IS TRANSMITTED AT THE REQUEST OF THE KENTUCKY EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCY AND METROSAFE IN LOUISVILLE KENTUCKY.
LOUISVILLE METROSAFE ASKS THAT PEOPLE LIVING WITHIN A FIVE MILE RADIUS OF DIXIE HIGHWAY AND KATHERINE STATION ROAD SHELTER IN PLACE UNTIL THE ALL CLEAR IS GIVEN. AN EXPLOSION OCCURRED EARLIER THIS AFTERNOON AT THE TRAIN DERAILMENT SITE. TO SHELTER IN PLACE...CLOSE ALL DOORS AND WINDOWS AND TURN OFF ANY SYSTEM THAT PULLS IN OUTSIDE AIR. STAY TUNED FOR UPDATES.
Let me define the 1.2 mile Mandatory Evacuation Zone. The ground zero location is at Dixie Highway and Katherin Station Road. The northern edge of this is 0.5 miles south of Lee Driveway & Dixie Highway. The eastern Edge is Ritchley Land and State Highway 44. The southern side of this is West Point, KY.
For the 5 mile Shelter In Place warning... The northern edge is Fincastle Trail and Dixie Highway. The eastern side is 1 mile east of the junction of Brooks Hill Road and Shepherdsville Road. The southern side is 3/4" mile north of the junction of Old Mill Road and Dixie Highway.

I think the media should have frequently shown a detailed map with the various evacuation / shelter-in-place area clearly shown.
Some of the many text messages sent out indicated the evacuation area was all of Louisville.
Much of the broadcasts revolved around speculation on how long an event(s) would take place or come to an end. Most of the reporters on-air time was spent in aimless repetition of very few facts - just saying something to fill the air time
