Major Nor'easter Could Dump Feet Of Snow!
By Saturday afternoon, parts of New England may be measuring snow not in inches, but in feet! Winter Storm Watches have been issued by the National Weather Service across a total of nine states. There are even Blizzard Watches up now for portions of Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
Here is the scenario as it unfolds on the European model. A storm will begin to ride up the coast on Friday morning with a low pressure of 1005mb.
It rapidly deepens into a monster that has a pressure of 978mb! We refer to this as "bomb" cyclogenesis when a storm drops 24mb in only 24 hours.
What does that mean for New England? Quite frankly, it's not looking good. This classic Nor'easter will literally bury coastal and interior sections of the region with up to 3 feet of snow! Just take a look at the snow output by late Saturday on both the EURO and GFS...
If the snow wasn't bad enough, the winds will be cranking up to over 50mph. Remember, in order for blizzard conditions to be present the winds must be sustained or gusting above 35mph. This storm will clearly meet that threshold creating visibilities near zero! Tidal flooding and beach erosion will also be an issue with the persistent onshore flow and approaching new moon. This storm will be sure to make headlines across the country!
Tune in to WDRB tonight with Marc Weinberg for more on this storm and what Kentuckiana should expect over the next week.
