Video of massive ice floe damaging homes in Minnesota

Northwest winds gusting to near 40 mph on Saturday May 11th, 2013 pushed large piles of ice onto shore along the southern edge of Mille Lacs Lake, damaging at least one lakeside townhome.

Video posted to YouTube by Darla Johnson from Izaty's Resort showed ice shards pushing ashore and against the townhomes. In at least one case, a sliding door was broken and the ice went into the home.

Northwest winds gusting to near 40 mph on Saturday pushed large piles of ice onto shore along the southern edge of Mille Lacs Lake, damaging at least one lakeside townhome.

Video posted to YouTube on Saturday from Izaty’s Resort showed ice shards pushing ashore and against the townhomes. In at least one case, a sliding door was broken and the ice went into the home.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources reported that about 10 miles of shoreline were affected, with some ice piles as tall as 30 feet.

Ice remained on many central and northern Minnesota lakes through Saturday, which was Minnesota's fishing opener. As ice started to break up on Mille Lacs, the steady, strong northwest winds shoved it ashore.

Izaty's Resort is located near Onamia, about 80 miles southwest of Duluth.

A similar — but more severe — event happened Friday night at Dauphin Lake in central Manitoba. Ice pushed ashore by northwest winds destroyed 12 homes and cottages and seriously damaged 15 more, the Winnipeg Free Press reported. No one was injured.
